LESSON 3 OF 16 • MENTAL FOUNDATION

Lesson 3: Heater, Hanger, Standard

From the AHD Mental Approach Masterclass with BK, for baseball and fastpitch softball hitters.

Today's Lesson

“Be ready for the heater. Don’t miss the hanger because you were mentally asleep.”

Most at-bats eventually offer a fastball you can handle, a hanging off-speed pitch or another mistake. The heater-hanger plan is the simple version of a college-ready at-bat: be ready to destroy the heater in your zone while staying athletic enough to punish a hanging breaking ball.

Every pitch also gives you information: velocity, shape, location, timing. Keep the information, drop the emotion. The last pitch is data, not baggage. Finally, write your Mental Standard: the behavior you expect from yourself no matter the result. Prepared, aggressive to the right pitch, committed, aware and able to reset. Behavior first. Emotion can follow.

Why It Matters

Many hitters miss damage pitches because they are mentally late or still upset about the last one. A simple plan plus a standard you can score makes the mental game something you train, not something you hope for.

Coaching Cue

Heater. Hanger. Learn it, leave it.

Today's Work

• Write your five-line Mental Standard (5 minutes): prepared, aggressive to the right pitch, committed, aware, able to reset. Put it in your own words.
• Heater, hanger round (10 minutes): 12 mixed BP pitches. Hunt the fastball. Hard contact on a fastball in your zone scores 2. Hammering a hanging off-speed pitch scores 3. Chasing scores nothing.
• Facts only: after every pitch, say one useful fact (“late,” “up,” “backed up,” “on time”), then reset. No commentary, no frustration.
• Score the session 1–5 on each line of your standard.

Track It

What pitch do you most often take or foul off when you should damage it? Which line of your standard will matter most when you struggle? Log your round score and your standard scores.

Next: Lesson 4 opens the Routine & Focus phase by building a pre-pitch routine that organizes your brain before the speed starts.

TODAY'S CHALLENGE

Heater, Hanger Standard

You need: Notes app, BP with mixed pitches

How to play: Write your five-line Mental Standard. Then run 12 pitches hunting the heater. Say one fact and reset after every pitch.

Scoring: Hard contact on a heater in your zone scores 2, a hammered hanger scores 3, a chase scores 0. Lose 1 for any pitch without a clean fact and reset. Capped at 30. Single 12, double 20, triple 26, home run 30.

Grade it: Below 12 = out. 12+ = single. 20+ = double. 26+ = triple. A perfect 30 = home run.
