LESSON 3 OF 16 • STANCE + LOAD
Lesson 3: The Gather
From the AHD Swing Structure & Mechanics Masterclass with BK, for baseball and fastpitch softball hitters.
Today's Lesson
“Different trigger, same job: start the move and organize time.”
The gather is the first move out of your ready position. You collect your weight and energy into the back side so you have something to move forward with. It starts with a trigger, any repeatable movement: a hand move, inward turn, leg lift, toe tap or rock. Style can vary. The job doesn’t. Start early enough to gather, see the pitch and get to launch without rushing.
Good looks like weight settling into the inside of the back leg, the back knee still flexed and the head staying inside the back foot. It feels like sitting into the back hip, with pressure on the inside of the back foot, not the outside edge. The gather is a controlled load, not a max coil. Gather enough to move well, not so much that you have to recover. The common mistake is the sway: the hips slide past the back foot, the head goes with them, and now you have to come back before you can go forward.
Softball note: the fastpitch gather is shorter and starts earlier. Many hitters trigger as the pitcher’s arm reaches the top of the circle and use a small toe tap or rock instead of a leg lift. At 43 feet, a big gather that starts late almost always ends up rushed.
Why It Matters
A repeatable gather creates rhythm without forcing one style on every hitter. Load into the back side and you have energy to send forward. Sway past it and you burn time getting back.
Coaching Cue
Start early. Sit in the back hip.
Today's Work
Rhythm reps (5 min): 15 dry reps synced to an imaginary pitcher: ready, pitcher moves, trigger, gather, hold. Start the trigger off the same visual cue every time.
• Gather holds (5 min): 10 slow gather-and-hold reps, 3 seconds each. Check that the head is inside the back foot and the back knee is still flexed.
• Wall check (4 min): set the outside of your back foot about 2 inches from a wall. 10 gathers without your back hip touching it. If it touches, you swayed.
• Gather to swing (6 min): 12 tee swings, pausing 1 second at the top of the gather before you go. Then 8 with no pause and the same gather.
Track It
Write how often your trigger started off the same cue (out of 15), gather holds with the head inside the back foot (out of 10), and wall touches. Zero touches is the standard.
Next: Lesson 4, The Directionally Sound Load: sending that gathered energy straight at the pitcher with the hands still back.
Tempo Changer
You need: Partner as “pitcher”, bat, space to swing
How to play: Partner mimics a delivery and changes tempo each rep. Run 10 trigger-and-gather reps and freeze at the top of the gather. A rep scores when the trigger starts on time, the head is inside the back foot and the back knee is still flexed.
Scoring: 1 point per scoring rep, out of 10. Single: 5+ points. Double: 7+. Triple: 9+. Home run: 10.
0 TB1️⃣ SINGLE
1 TB2️⃣ DOUBLE
2 TB3️⃣ TRIPLE
3 TB💥 HR
4 TB
Grade it: Below 5 = out. 5+ = single. 7+ = double. 9+ = triple. A perfect 10 = home run.
