LESSON 2 OF 16 • MENTAL FOUNDATION
Lesson 2: Hunt Your Destroy Zone
From the AHD Mental Approach Masterclass with BK, for baseball and fastpitch softball hitters.
Today's Lesson
“Aggressive does not mean swing at everything. The goal is a violent yes and an easy no.”
Aggressive is hunting a strike you can barrel with a clear plan. Reckless is swinging because fear or frustration made the decision. Passive is being late to conviction. The answer is controlled aggression: ready early, selective enough to say no.
That starts with your destroy zone, the area and pitch type where your timing, bat speed and contact quality are best, and where your Mechanically Advantaged Angles let you drive the ball. You are allowed to have a favorite pitch. Then pick how you hunt it. Plan A: anticipate a likely pitch in that zone and react to what arrives. Plan B: stay neutral and react. Both are plans. “See ball, hit ball” is not.
Why It Matters
A hitter without a preferred attack zone reacts to everything equally. A hitter with a destroy zone and a chosen approach commits faster and gives away fewer at-bats.
Coaching Cue
My pitch. Violent yes, easy no.
Today's Work
• Draw a strike zone (3 minutes). Mark your destroy zone, acceptable area and take area for an advantage count. Write one sentence that defines a barrel-able pitch for you.
• Violent yes, easy no (8 minutes): 20 front-toss reps with a partner calling “ball” or “strike” late. Load fully every pitch and still take the balls. Only swing at pitches inside your destroy zone.
• A/B test (8 minutes): 20 pitches. For 10, anticipate a fastball in your destroy zone. For 10, stay neutral. Note which approach gave you the cleaner decisions.
Track It
Do you usually lose at-bats by being too passive or too reckless? Write your destroy zone, your barrel-able pitch sentence and which approach (A or B) gave you clearer decisions.
Next: Lesson 3 gives you the simplest at-bat plan in hitting, heater or hanger, and turns it into your Mental Standard.
Violent Yes, Easy No
You need: Front toss, partner calling late, your destroy-zone drawing
How to play: 20 reps. Partner calls ball or strike late. Load fully every pitch, swing only in your destroy zone and take everything else.
Scoring: 1 point for a full load plus the correct decision. Single 12, double 16, triple 18, home run 20.
0 TB1️⃣ SINGLE
1 TB2️⃣ DOUBLE
2 TB3️⃣ TRIPLE
3 TB💥 HR
4 TB
Grade it: Below 12 = out. 12+ = single. 16+ = double. 18+ = triple. A perfect 20 = home run.
