LESSON 1 OF 16 • FOUNDATION
Lesson 1: The Fooled Test
From the AHD Off-Speed Masterclass with BK, for baseball and fastpitch softball hitters.
Today's Lesson
“If you can’t tell fast from slow by the time the ball is halfway, you’re guessing. Ten pitches will show you how often.”
Off-speed does not beat you with a different pitch. It beats you by changing when the ball arrives. Most hitters fight it by sitting on the breaking ball, and they end up late on the fastball and still fooled by the slow one. The fix is the opposite: be on time for the heater, keep an athletic position that can wait, and let your eyes collect speed and height before you decide.
In this lesson you take the Fooled Test, make one quick fix to your setup, and take it again. Most hitters see the number move in one session.
Why It Matters
The test separates a seeing problem from a body problem. Hitters who think “new pitch, new swing” make emergency changes and lose both pitches. A fastball clock plus a body that can wait fixes most of it.
Coaching Cue
On time for heat. Stay athletic. See it first.
Today's Work
One session, about 20 minutes:
• The Fooled Test (10 pitches): partner mixes firm and slow front toss without telling you. Call “firm” or “soft” out loud before the ball is halfway, then swing. Mark any swing where you lunged, stood up or lost balance as “fooled.”
• Heater clock (10 tosses): one firm speed only. Same setup, same start time every rep.
• Pause-at-gather (2 sets of 6): nose centered, knees athletic. Hold the gathered position for one count, then swing.
• No-swing tracking (10 mixed pitches): call only “fast/slow” and “up/middle/down.” See first, label second, decide third.
• Retake the Fooled Test with the same partner.
Track It
Write down both Fooled Test scores: early correct calls out of 10, minus fooled swings. The gap between the first and second test is what athletic position and a fastball clock are worth to you.
Next: Lesson 2 moves your eyes to the first clue of every pitch, the release point, and teaches you to read spin without staring at seams.
The Fooled Test
You need: Partner for front toss, 10 balls, bat
How to play: Partner mixes firm and slow tosses without telling you. Call “firm” or “soft” before the ball is halfway, then swing. Take it once cold and once after the heater clock and pause-at-gather work. Log the second score.
Scoring: 1 point per early correct call, minus 1 for every fooled swing (lunge, stand up or lose balance). Out of 10; log 0 if it goes negative. Single: 4. Double: 6. Triple: 9. Home run: a perfect 10.

1 TB2️⃣ DOUBLE
2 TB3️⃣ TRIPLE
3 TB💥 HR

Grade it: Below 4 = out. 4+ = single. 6+ = double. 9+ = triple. A perfect 10 = home run.

Write today's score down. You'll retest against it later in the course, and that before-and-after is the proof your hitter is getting better.
