LESSON 2 OF 16 • FOUNDATION
Lesson 2: Release, Spin and Patience
From the AHD Off-Speed Masterclass with BK, for baseball and fastpitch softball hitters.
Today's Lesson
“Early eyes create late decisions.”
The first clue on every pitch is the release point. If your eyes are already at the pitcher’s hand, you get more time to read speed and shape. Next is spin. You do not have to decode it like a physics test. Notice the broad picture: tight and straight, sideways tilt, or a tumble like a changeup.
Then let your body use that time. Your gather and stride can start on time without the barrel starting. Getting ready is not the same as committing. Hitters who commit the whole body early are the ones who lunge at slow pitches.
Why It Matters
Late visual pickup makes every secondary pitch feel faster and sharper. Early pickup plus a controlled forward move gives the processor time to act before the barrel is gone.
Coaching Cue
Find release. Notice spin. Launch on information.
Today's Work
About 20 minutes:
• Release pickup (20 tosses, no swing): partner tosses from a consistent release. Say “release” the instant the ball appears, then track it in.
• Spin calls (20 reps, no swing): use marked or contrasting-seam balls. Call “straight,” “side” or “tumble.”
• Stride-and-hold (15 reps): finish the forward move, freeze briefly, then swing from the launch position.
• Mixed-speed finish (10 swings): keep the same quiet head from the tracking reps and make the spin call before you swing.
Track It
Release found immediately out of 20 (goal 18). Spin calls correct out of 20. Stable launch position out of 15 (goal 12).
Next: Lesson 3 keeps your head quiet, turns takes into training reps, and runs the Foundation Test that sets your baseline.
Read It, Then Commit
You need: Bat, balls and a partner to mix speeds
How to play: 10 mixed-speed tosses. Call the spin (“straight,” “side” or “tumble”) before you swing. A rep scores only if the call matches the pitch, the stride stays controlled and contact is solid.
Scoring: Single: 4 of 10 reps score. Double: 6 of 10. Triple: 8 of 10. Home run: a perfect 10 of 10.
0 TB1️⃣ SINGLE
1 TB2️⃣ DOUBLE
2 TB3️⃣ TRIPLE
3 TB💥 HR
4 TB
Grade it: Below 4 = out. 4+ = single. 6+ = double. 8+ = triple. A perfect 10 = home run.
