Complete Hitters Are Built… It’s Earned!
You want to be a good hitter? A good curveball hitter? A hitter who can handle spin and real movement? Put down the video games and bring back Wiffle ball. In every backyard, at every park, everywhere.
Wiffle ball is the cheapest spin lab in the sport, because every game gives hitters real movement, velocity changes and pressure, so they have to see it, recognize it and adjust the barrel late. The light ball also tells the truth: ball flight shows instantly whether you got under it, rolled over it or hit it square.
Train it: Hitting Processor Masterclass →It’s fun. It’s cheap. It doesn’t take much room. And it teaches young hitters the thing this country has stopped teaching them: how to hit a ball that moves.
Key takeaways
- Wiffle ball gives hitters velocity changes, spin and real movement in every game.
- The ball shows you your swing. Ball flight is instant feedback on your barrel path and contact.
- It builds adjustability: you can’t guess, you have to see it and react.
- All you need is a plastic bat, a ball, a yard and a few friends. Maybe a Big Gulp on the line.
- Bring back Wiffle ball, and we’ll start hitting spin again as a country.
1. Why we can’t hit spin
Most young hitters today see straight pitches. Machines. Front toss. Coach-pitch BP at the same speed every round. Then they get in a game and see a breaking ball and it looks like it came from another planet.
You can’t learn to hit spin if you never see spin. That’s the whole problem, and it’s why we wrote about the Galvan Method and seeing spin every day.
The cheapest fix in the history of baseball is sitting in a box at the sporting goods store.
2. What Wiffle ball teaches
1. Spin and movement
The holes on one side of the ball make it curve, sink, rise and dive. Every kid becomes a pitcher with a nasty breaking ball, and every hitter has to deal with it.
2. Changes in velocity
Fast one, slow one, a floater that never seems to get there. Hitters learn to stay back, wait and adjust their timing, pitch to pitch.
3. Adjustability
You can’t sit on one pitch. You have to see it, recognize it and adjust the barrel late. That’s the hitting processor: See It → Recognize It → Time It → Decide → Attack It.
4. Competing
Score is kept. Friends are talking trash. Somebody’s buying the Big Gulp. That’s pressure, and that’s how you learn to compete.
3. The ball tells the truth
Wiffle balls give you accelerated feedback. The ball is so light that it shows you exactly how you hit it.
- Get under it and it floats straight up or loops foul.
- Roll over it and it dives into the ground.
- Cut across it and it slices off the side of the house.
- Hit it square, barrel behind the hands, and it jumps off the bat on a line.
The spin coming off the bat tells you about your swing path, your contact point and your timing, right now, every swing. That’s feel vs real, and the ball doesn’t lie.
THE BACKYARD LAB
BRING BACKWIFFLE BALL.
- See real spin.
- Handle velo changes.
- Learn to adjust.
- Read the ball flight.
- Compete for something.
CHEAP. FUN. AND IT WORKS.
4. Backyard rules
Every good Wiffle ball game has its own rules. When somebody yelled “CAR!”, the game stopped until it went by. Over the house was a nuke. And into Joe Garagiola’s house? That was an out.
I was lucky enough to play a whole lot of those games at the Brennan compound. Some of the best hitting lessons I ever got didn’t come from a coach. They came from a plastic ball, a skinny yellow bat and a bunch of kids who wanted to win.
Make your own rules. That’s half the fun.
5. How to start this week
- Players: grab a Wiffle ball and a bat and play 20 minutes a day. Learn to throw a curve, and learn to hit one.
- Parents: it costs less than a pizza. Get one for the backyard and play with them.
- Coaches: end practice with a Wiffle ball home run derby or a game. Let pitchers spin it. Keep score.

Quick answers
Does Wiffle ball help you hit curveballs?
Yes. A Wiffle ball curves, sinks and changes speed, so hitters see spin and movement every game. That builds pitch recognition and the ability to adjust the barrel late, the same skills it takes to hit a curveball.
Is Wiffle ball good for baseball and softball hitters?
It is a cheap, fun way to train vision, timing and adjustability. The light ball also gives instant feedback: ball flight shows if you got under it, rolled over it or hit it square.
How much space do you need for Wiffle ball?
Not much. A backyard, a driveway or a corner of a park works. The ball is light and slow enough to play almost anywhere.
Why can’t young hitters hit curveballs?
Most of them only see straight pitches: machines, front toss and coach-pitch BP at one speed. You can’t learn to hit spin if you never see spin. Wiffle ball puts a breaking ball in front of every hitter, every game.
