Complete Hitters Are Built… It’s Earned!

Most hitters train their eyes and decisions once in a while — a few spin rounds before the playoffs, a little two-strike work when someone remembers. Then they wonder why the curveball still wins.

QUICK ANSWER

Train the Hitting Processor five minutes a day, one focus per day: see the release, call heater or spin, time the load, decide yes or no, attack, compete by count, then retest Sunday. Short, daily, scored reps beat one long session a month.

Train it: Hitting Processor Masterclass →

The Hitting Processor is one of the 4 Pillars of a Complete Hitter. It is how a hitter turns what the eyes see into a swing decision. And like any skill, it gets better with short, regular, honest reps — not with one big session a month.

See It. Recognize It. Time It. Decide. Attack It.

This plan gives you five minutes a day, Monday through Sunday, with one focus each day and a score you can track. Most of it can be done at home, with a partner, or with nothing more than a phone and a game on TV.

1. Why the Processor has to be trained daily

A hitter has roughly four-tenths of a second to see the pitch, recognize it, time it, decide and attack it. There is no time to think it through. The only way to get faster is to have done it so many times that it happens without thinking.

That is why seeing spin once in a while doesn’t work. Saguaro’s hitters saw spin every day, and it showed up when it mattered. Daily, short and scored beats rare, long and random.

Train the Processor the way you train the swing: a little, every day, on purpose.

2. The rules

  1. Five minutes. Set a timer. Quality reps, then you’re done.
  2. One focus a day. Each day trains one step of the sequence.
  3. Say it out loud. Calls like “now,” “heater,” “spin,” “yes” or “no” force a real decision instead of a vague feeling.
  4. Score it. Write the number down. What gets measured gets better.
  5. Same sequence, every rep. See It → Recognize It → Time It → Decide → Attack It.

3. The 7-day plan

Monday — See It: find the release window

The rep: Watch 20 pitches on video or from a live pitcher. Start with soft focus on the pitcher’s body, then shift to fine focus at the release window. Say “now” the instant the ball comes out of the hand.

Score: On-time “now” calls out of 20.

Tuesday — Recognize It: heater or spin?

The rep: Twenty pitches from video, a partner’s mixed front toss or a machine. Before the ball is halfway, call it: “heater” or “spin.” Keep it that simple — the heater, hanger idea.

Score: Correct calls out of 20.

Wednesday — Time It: load on the break

The rep: Fifteen dry swings or front-toss swings timed to a pitcher on video or a partner’s arm. Start the load as the pitcher’s hands break, be landed and ready at release. Cue: early, slow and on time.

Score: On-time landings out of 15.

Thursday — Decide: yes or no

The rep: The call-it drill. Mixed pitches from video or front toss — call “yes” or “no” out loud before the ball reaches the plate. Swing only on yes. Take with intent on no.

Score: Correct decisions out of 20.

Friday — Attack It: damage-pitch round

The rep: Choose one zone. Swing only at pitches there, and when it shows up, attack it with a decisive swing. Track decisive swings, not results.

Score: Decisive swings on damage pitches.

Saturday — Compete: count leverage

The rep: Play a round by counts. Ahead in the count, hunt your pitch. Two strikes, widen the zone and battle. Say the count and your plan before each pitch.

Score: Pitches where your swing or take matched your plan.

Sunday — Retest: the decision test

The rep: Repeat Thursday’s 20-pitch yes/no test, same setup as last week. Compare the number.

Score: Correct decisions out of 20 — your weekly Processor number.

The number that matters most is Sunday’s. If it climbs week to week, the Processor is getting better — and it will show up in games as fewer chases, fewer frozen strikes and more barrels on mistakes.

Quick answers

How long should pitch recognition training take each day?

Five focused minutes is enough to build the habit. Short, daily, scored reps beat a long session once a month because the Hitting Processor improves through repetition, not volume.

Can hitters train pitch recognition at home?

Yes. Release-window calls, heater-or-spin calls and yes/no decision calls can all be done with game video and a phone. Front toss or a machine adds real timing and swings when you have them.

What is the Hitting Processor?

The Hitting Processor is how a hitter turns what the eyes see into a swing decision: See It, Recognize It, Time It, Decide, Attack It. It is one of the four pillars AHD trains, with the swing, athletic development and the mental approach.

How do I know if pitch recognition is improving?

Retest the same way every week. In this plan, Sunday’s 20-pitch yes/no decision test is the weekly number. If it climbs, decisions are improving — in games that shows up as fewer chases and fewer frozen strikes.

What is a good daily pitch recognition drill for youth hitters?

The call-it drill. Mixed pitches from video or front toss, and the hitter calls “yes” or “no” out loud before the ball reaches the plate. Swing only on yes, take with intent on no, and score correct decisions out of 20.
