Complete Hitters Aren’t Born. They’re Built… and Earned.
Key takeaways
- A drill transfers when it makes the hitter solve a piece of the at-bat: read, time, decide or adjust.
- Tee and front toss still have a job. The mistake is treating them as the whole game.
- Score decisions, not just contact. A great swing at the wrong pitch is still a loss.
- Progress one drill instead of collecting new ones. Add speed, movement, decisions or pressure as the hitter owns it.
College baseball hitting drills transfer to games when they make the hitter read, time and decide, not just swing. Mix speeds, score yes/no decisions, run count-specific rounds and progress each drill toward game speed. A round that only rehearses contact on the same pitch won’t hold up against a college arm.

Train it: Hitting Processor → Free tool: Pitch Recognition Trainer →There’s nothing wrong with a tee. There’s nothing wrong with front toss. I’ve used both every day for 25 years. The problem starts when a hitter thinks a great round in the cage means he’s ready for a guy who mixes three pitches and doesn’t care how pretty your BP looked.
College pitchers don’t put the ball in the same place at the same speed with no decision attached. So your drills can’t either.
1. What makes a hitting drill transfer to games?
Run every drill through one test: does it ask the hitter to solve a piece of the at-bat? Reading the ball out of the hand. Getting on time. Deciding yes or no. Adjusting to speed or location. If it does none of those, it may still build the swing, but it isn’t enough by itself for college baseball.
Know the job of every round.
THE DRILL TEST
DOES ITTRANSFER?
- Read the release
- Get on time
- Decide yes or no
- Adjust to speed
SOLVE A PIECE OF THE AT-BAT
2. Which drills carry over best for college hitters?
- Variable-speed front tossMix speeds and timing windows so the hitter has to gather and get on time every pitch. It’s a bridge to live pitching, not a replacement for it.
- Take / attack decision roundsName a hunt zone before the round. The hitter calls yes or no early and gets scored on the decision, not only the contact.
- Count roundsPlay the round at 0–0, ahead, behind or two strikes. The swing stays the same; the job changes.
- Short film and reassessFilm a handful of competitive swings, find the first real breakdown, give one cue, then film again.
- Constraint roundsA middle-of-the-field target or an opposite-field line that teaches a real adjustment, never one that forces a fake swing.
Decision rounds are the ones most college hitters skip, and they’re the ones better pitching exposes first. “Swing at a bad pitch? No biggie. Take a good pitch to hit? Not happening.” Score the takes of hittable pitches as the bigger miss. Be aggressive on pitches you can drive.
3. How do you score a decision round?
| Result | Points |
|---|---|
| Swing at a pitch in your zone, hit hard | +3 |
| Swing at a pitch in your zone, miss or mis-hit | +1 |
| Take a pitch out of your zone | +1 |
| Chase a pitch out of your zone | −1 |
| Take a pitch in your zone | −2 |
Simple scoring changes how a hitter practices. He stops trying to win BP and starts trying to win the at-bat. The free Chase Tool trains the same decisions on a phone between cage days.
4. How do you progress a drill instead of collecting drills?
A hitter doesn’t need a new drill for every problem. Start with the simplest version that teaches the job. When he owns it, add one thing:
- Speed. Shorter distance or firmer toss.
- Movement. Mix in spin or changeup-speed toss.
- Decisions. A zone to hunt and a call to make.
- Pressure. A score, a count, a teammate watching.
If the skill breaks down, back up a step without shame and rebuild it. That’s how a drill turns into a game skill. It’s also why the swing pieces matter: hitters with good Mechanically Advantaged Angles (MAA) stay inside and above the ball longer, so they can still adjust when the drill gets harder.

THELESSON.
- Simplest version first
- Add speed or movement
- Add a decision
- Add pressure last
Complete Hitters Are Built…Earned.
5. How much of a college hitter’s work should be game-like?
Some every day. Tee and flips still build the move, especially early in the fall. But every week needs rounds where the hitter reads a release, moves on time and makes a decision before the swing. A few minutes of daily Processor work, like the 5-minute daily pitch recognition plan, adds up fast.
For the bigger picture of what college pitching changes, read how to prepare for college baseball pitching and the college baseball hitting guide. If you’re not sure where your hitter’s gap is, start with a free SwingChecker™, then train the read in the Hitting Processor course.

Quick answers
Are tee drills useful for college hitters?
Yes. The tee builds and cleans up the move. It just can’t teach reading, timing or decisions, so it should never be the whole week.
What is the best hitting drill for game transfer?
A decision round, where the hitter calls yes or no on a hunt zone and gets scored on the decision as well as the contact. It trains the part of the at-bat better pitching exposes first.
How do I make batting practice more game-like?
Mix speeds, name a zone to hunt, play counts and keep score. Even two or three game-like rounds a week change how a hitter competes.
How often should I change hitting drills?
Less often than you think. Progress the drill you have by adding speed, movement, decisions or pressure once the hitter owns the simple version.
Don’t collect drills. Build a complete hitter.
