Complete Hitters Aren’t Born. They’re Built… and Earned.
Key takeaways
- What a private hitting coach makes depends on four things: rate, hours, location and retention.
- One public Scottsdale example: $60–$75 per 30 minutes, $100–$150 per hour (Oct 2026).
- At $100–$150 an hour, the $599 founding AHD Coach Certification is covered by roughly 4–6 one-hour lessons. That’s arithmetic, not a promise.
- Retention is the real money. Families stay with a coach who has a plan, one priority and a retest.
What a hitting coach makes depends on what you charge, how many hours you actually teach, your local market and how long families stay. I won’t give you a salary number, because there isn’t an honest one. I’ll give you real public rates and the math to run your own.
It depends on your rate, hours, location and how long families stay. One Scottsdale facility lists $60–$75 per 30 minutes and $100–$150 per hour; at those rates the $599 founding AHD Coach Certification is covered by roughly 4–6 one-hour lessons — simple math, not an income promise.
Train it: AHD Coach Certification → Free tool: AHD Coach Foundations Lesson 1 (free) →I’ve coached hitters for a long time — 30 years in high school and college in Arizona and Texas, and 25-plus years developing hitters privately here in Scottsdale. Coaches ask me about money all the time. Fair question.
Here’s the straight version: the rate is the easy part. Filling hours and keeping families is the job.
1. What decides how much a hitting instructor makes?
- Your rate. Set by your market, your experience and the results families can see.
- Your hours. Lessons cluster after school and on weekends. You can only teach so many prime-time hours.
- Your location. Cage rent, travel and local demand vary a lot from town to town.
- Your retention. A family that stays a year is worth far more than one that tries two lessons and leaves.
- Your costs. Facility time, insurance, equipment, travel and no-shows all come out of the gross.
Notice what’s missing: a magic salary. Anybody who quotes you one number for “hitting coach income” is guessing.
COACH INCOME
IT DEPENDSON…
- Your rate
- Hours you actually teach
- Your local market
- How long families stay
- Your real costs
NO MAGIC SALARY NUMBER.
2. How much do private hitting lessons cost in a real market?
Let’s use a real, public number. Scottsdale Batting Cages lists private lessons at $60–$75 for 30 minutes and $100–$150 for an hour (October 2026). That’s a fair picture of a metro market like ours. Your town may be higher or lower.
Parents see the other side of this in How Much Do Hitting Lessons Cost? Read it. It shows you what families are weighing when they decide whether to book you again.
3. What does the math look like?
Here’s simple gross arithmetic at that public range, before any costs. These are examples, not predictions.
| One-hour lessons per week | At $100/hour | At $150/hour |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | $500 gross | $750 gross |
| 10 | $1,000 gross | $1,500 gross |
| 15 | $1,500 gross | $2,250 gross |
Now subtract cage time, travel, insurance and the weeks families take off for travel ball and vacations. What’s left is what you actually make. Only you can fill in those numbers.
Run it for your own situation in four lines. Write your rate. Write how many hours you can honestly teach in a normal week, not your best week. Write your weekly costs. Then multiply by the weeks you really work in a year, not 52. That’s your number, and it’s more useful than any average you’ll find online.
Watch the calendar, too. In my experience, demand rises before seasons and tryouts and dips in the middle of summer travel ball and over the holidays. Plan for the slow months instead of being surprised by them.
Gross is what you bill. Net is what you keep.
4. How long does it take to pay off a coaching certification?
This is the math I like, because it’s simple. The AHD Coach Certification founding price is $599.
- At $150 an hour$599 ÷ $150 ≈ 4 one-hour lessons.
- At $100 an hour$599 ÷ $100 ≈ 6 one-hour lessons.
- At $60–$75 per 30 minutesAbout 8–10 half-hour lessons.
That’s what I mean when I say you can make your money back in about 4 hours. It’s arithmetic at those rates, not an income guarantee. Your rates and your clients are your own.
What you get for it: all 8 coach courses (the 7 Coach Editions plus the 24-lesson Coach Foundations course), a final test in every course, a 50-question Certification Final, and a Practical Video Exam I grade myself. Regular price is $799; the $995 tier adds my personal review of one athlete’s assessment and the development plan you write for that athlete.

5. How do hitting coaches keep clients and grow?
Rate gets a family in the door. Progress keeps them. In my experience, families stay when they can see three things.
- A plan. Assess, diagnose, build a roadmap, train, reassess. Show the parent where the hitter is going.
- ONE priority. Not ten faults. Parents trust a coach who can say “this is the thing” and explain why.
- A retest. Have hitters take the free SwingChecker™ at the start and again in 30 days. Progress you can show is progress they’ll pay for.
- The whole hitter. Coach all 4 pillars, not just the swing. Hitters who also learn to time it and decide win games, and families notice.

Quick answers
How much do private hitting instructors make per hour?
It depends on the market. One Scottsdale facility publicly lists $60–$75 per 30 minutes and $100–$150 per hour (October 2026); your take-home is that rate minus facility, travel and other costs.
Can you make a living as a hitting coach?
Some coaches do, but it depends on filling enough hours and keeping families over time. Many private instructors start part-time while they build a client base.
How much should I charge for hitting lessons?
Look at what established coaches in your area publicly charge, then price for your experience and results. Raising your rate is easier when you can show families real progress with a retest.
Is a hitting coach certification worth the cost?
At $100–$150 an hour, the $599 founding AHD Coach Certification is covered by roughly 4–6 one-hour lessons. The bigger value is a system that helps you keep families, but that part is up to your coaching.
