Complete Hitters Are Built… It’s Earned!

Key takeaways

  • Becoming a private hitting instructor takes a teaching system, reps with real hitters, and a way to prove they got better.
  • There’s no national license to teach hitting, but background checks, safety training and insurance are part of working with kids.
  • Price from your local market and your results, and sell a plan, not a single lesson.
  • Your first hitters come from coaches, teams and parents who see results on video.

To become a private hitting instructor, learn a system for assessing and teaching hitters, coach real hitters until you can show them getting better, then set up the business side: a place to work, safety basics, insurance and fair pricing.

I’ve spent 52 years playing, coaching and scouting this game, and I still teach lessons in Scottsdale. A lot of former players figure being able to hit means being able to teach it. It doesn’t. Teaching hitting is its own skill, and the good news is it can be learned.

This is for former players, high school and travel coaches, and softball players who want to start giving lessons, part-time or as a real business.

1. What does a private hitting instructor actually do?

Parents think they’re paying for drills. They’re really paying for judgment: what this hitter needs next, and what to leave alone.

The swing is only part of it. A complete hitter also needs strength and explosiveness, a trained Hitting Processor and a mental approach. An instructor who only fixes mechanics builds great cage hitters who struggle in games.

2. Do you need a certification to give hitting lessons?

There’s no national license to teach hitting. But working with kids comes with responsibilities, and smart instructors take care of them before the first lesson.

A hitting certification is optional, but it does two jobs. It gives you a system to teach from, and it gives parents a reason to trust a new name. For more, read How to Become a Certified Hitting Coach.

3. How do I build my teaching system?

Teach principles, not a copied swing.

Every hitter’s body is different. Teach the principles all good swings share. I coach by checkpoints and Mechanically Advantaged Angles (MAA), the positions that let a hitter create force and adjust, and I let the hitter own the rest.

  1. Use one assessmentThe same one every time, so you can compare hitters and retest. SwingChecker™ and the 4 Pillars Hitter Scorecard are free.
  2. Trace symptoms to causes“Pulling off” is a symptom. Balance, timing or a bad decision may be the cause.
  3. Keep a cue and drill listA few cues and drills you know cold for each common problem, not a hundred.
  4. Film every hitterSide and behind, same angles every session. Video is your proof.
  5. Write the plan downParents remember what they can read.

4. Where should I teach, and what should I charge?

Most instructors start by renting cage time at a facility, working at a team’s field, or teaching online with video. Each one changes your costs and how many hitters you can see.

For pricing, look at your own market. In Scottsdale, for example, one batting cage facility publicly lists private lessons at $60–$75 for 30 minutes and $100–$150 for an hour. Your rate should reflect your experience, your results and what you include.

5. How do I get my first hitters?

  1. Start with coachesOffer a free team hitting session or a preseason evaluation. Coaches send you players.
  2. Show before and afterWith permission, share video of a hitter’s first session next to week six.
  3. Be honest about fitIf a hitter needs a strength coach or a doctor first, say so. Trust is your marketing.
  4. Ask for referralsThe family that saw results is your best sales person.

If you want a system to start from, AHD’s Complete Hitter Development for Coaches is 24 lessons, $199, and ends with a filmed coaching session I grade. Quick answers

Do you need a license to be a hitting instructor?

There’s no national license to teach hitting. Facilities, clubs and associations often require a background check and safety training, and you should talk to an insurance agent about liability coverage.

How much do private hitting instructors charge?

It depends on the market and the instructor. In Scottsdale, one facility publicly lists $60–$75 for 30 minutes and $100–$150 for an hour. Price from your local market and your results.

Do I need to have played college or pro ball to give hitting lessons?

No. Playing experience helps you earn trust, but the job is assessing and teaching hitters. That skill comes from a system, reps and honest feedback.

Is a hitting instructor certification worth it?

It is if it gives you a teaching system and makes you prove you can coach with an exam and a graded session. It also gives parents a reason to trust a new instructor.
