- Good hitting coaches diagnose causes, not symptoms, and pick one priority instead of ten faults.
- Most paths combine a playing background, time under an experienced coach, and formal coaching education.
- AHD’s certification is 24 lessons, about 12 hours, $199, with an exam and a filmed coaching session graded by me.

Train it: Complete Hitter Development for Coaches →I’ve spent 52 years playing, coaching and scouting this game, including 30 years coaching high school and college baseball and softball in Arizona and Texas. The best hitting coaches I’ve known didn’t start with a certificate. They started with curiosity and a lot of bad swings to fix.
This guide is for youth, travel and high school coaches, and for former players who want to teach hitting. Here’s what the job really takes, the paths people use to get there, and what any certification should prove.
1. What makes a good hitting coach?
Being a good hitter and being a good hitting coach are two different skills. Plenty of great hitters can’t explain what they do. Plenty of great coaches never hit .300 in their lives.
- Teaches principles, not a copied swing. Every hitter’s body is different. Good coaches teach the principles that all good swings share and let the hitter own the rest.
- Diagnoses causes, not symptoms. “He’s pulling off the ball” is a symptom. The cause might be balance, timing, or a bad swing decision. Fix the cause and the symptom goes away.
- Picks ONE priority. A kid can’t work on ten things. Find the one that matters most and stay on it until it changes.
- Coaches the whole hitter. The swing is only one of the 4 Pillars. Strength & Explosiveness, the Hitting Processor and the Mental Approach matter just as much.
- Communicates to kids and parents. Short cues for the player. A clear plan for the parent. Honest about what’s working and what isn’t.
When I coach the swing, I coach by checkpoints and Mechanically Advantaged Angles (MAA) — the positions that let a hitter create force and adjust. But I never start there. I start by assessing. For more on this, read What Makes an Elite Coach?
FOR COACHES
GOOD HITTINGCOACHES…
- Assess before they instruct
- Fix causes, not symptoms
- Pick one priority
- Coach all 4 Pillars
- Talk straight to kids and parents
COACH THE HITTER, NOT THE PICTURE.
2. What are the paths to becoming a hitting coach?
There’s no single license for teaching hitting. Most good coaches build their skill through a mix of these paths.
- Playing backgroundIt helps you understand the game and earn trust, but it is a starting point, not a teaching method.
- Mentoring under an experienced coachWatching a good coach run a cage, then running it while they watch you, is still the fastest way to learn.
- Coaching educationIf you coach high school, your state association likely requires coaching-education courses — check your state’s rules.
- A hitting-specific certificationThis is where you learn a system for assessing, teaching and planning for hitters, and prove you can use it.
- Reps with real hittersCoach every week. Film it. Re-watch it. Ask whether the hitter actually got better.
About that coaching-education step: the NFHS “Fundamentals of Coaching” course has become a primary part of new-coach training in most state associations, and states often require it for high school coaches. It covers philosophy, safety, communication and practice planning. It’s a good foundation — it just isn’t built to teach you how to fix a swing.
3. What should a hitting coach certification actually test?
Watching videos is not coaching. A real certification makes you coach.
Before you pay for any hitting coach certification, online or in person, ask these questions.
- Is there an exam with a passing score? Not just a “completed” checkmark at the end.
- Do you have to coach on camera? A filmed session, graded by an experienced coach, is the best proof you can teach.
- Is it graded on a clear rubric? You should know what’s being scored: assessment, diagnosis, communication.
- Does it cover more than mechanics? Timing, pitch recognition, swing decisions and the mental side lose more at-bats than bad mechanics do.
- Is it honest about what it is? Know whether the credential is an organization’s own credential or an accredited CEU.
That last point matters. Be skeptical of anything that promises you’ll be an “expert” after a weekend. For more on vetting coaches, read There’s No Secret Sauce: How to Vet a Hitting Coach.
4. How does the AHD hitting coach certification work?
I built Complete Hitter Development for Coaches for baseball and fastpitch coaches at every level, plus parents who coach their own players. Here’s exactly what it is.
| Piece | What it involves |
|---|---|
| Lessons | 24 lessons, 8 modules, about 12 instructional hours; Lessons 1–3 are free |
| Exam | 32 questions, 80% passes, and you can retake it |
| Practical work | A video-assessment worksheet, a 90-minute practice plan and a four-week athlete plan |
| Capstone | Your coaching philosophy plus a 10–15 minute filmed session I grade on a 100-point rubric (80 passes) |
| Credential | AHD Certified Coach: numbered certificate and registry listing, valid two years |
| Price | $199 one-time, 1 year of access, exam and filmed-session review included |
You learn the AHD coaching sequence — Assess, Diagnose, Build Roadmap, Train, Reassess — and how to trace a symptom back to its root cause before you give a cue or a drill. Most coaches finish in 4 to 8 weeks.
To be straight with you: AHD Certified Coach is an AHD credential. It was built to continuing-education standards, but until outside accreditation is approved, it is not an official CEU. It won’t replace whatever coaching-education courses your state or league requires.
5. How can I start coaching hitting better this season?
You don’t need to wait for a certificate to coach better tomorrow.
- Assess before you teach. Have every player take the free SwingChecker. It takes about 3 minutes and ranks each hitter’s top priority across the 4 Pillars — a simple team evaluation tool. See Preseason Hitting Evaluation for Teams.
- Fix your practice structure. Small groups, one job per station, no lines. Use the Team Hitting Practice Plan.
- Train the Hitting Processor DAILY. See it, time it, decide, attack it. It’s the pillar most practices skip.
- Film your own coaching. Watch one session a week. Count your cues. Fewer is usually better.
If you’d rather see the system run live with your players, I travel for team hitting camps and clinics — 12 to 60 players, ages 8 through high school, baseball, fastpitch or combined. Text me at 480-881-5447 for team or staff pricing.
