Key takeaways

  • Being unsigned as a senior is common — most college baseball players don't come from early Division I commitments.
  • Widen the target list: NCAA D2, D3, NAIA and JUCO programs recruit later and keep recruiting seniors.
  • Coaches trust proof: game video against live pitching and measured numbers with a source.
  • Run a tight 90-day plan: proof first, then outreach, then visits and tryouts.

Yes, an unsigned senior can still get recruited — but not by waiting. Aim at the levels still building rosters, show coaches proof they can trust, and contact them first.

QUICK ANSWER

Yes, an unsigned senior can still get recruited. Target Division II, Division III, NAIA and JUCO programs that recruit later, send game video and measured numbers with a source, and contact 15 or more schools yourself.

College baseball recruiting got crazy. Division I rosters shrank, the transfer portal is full of older players, and a lot of good high school seniors are sitting there uncommitted, wondering if the door just closed.

It didn't. It moved. Here's where it moved, and how a hitter walks through it.

Why are so many good seniors unsigned right now?

Two things changed at the same time. Division I schools in the House settlement now carry a 34-player roster limit, starting in the 2025–26 school year. Fewer spots means fewer freshmen.

At the same time, the transfer portal gives those coaches older, proven college players to choose from. A 21-year-old with college at-bats is a safer bet for a coach who has to win now.

Keep perspective, too. NCAA Division I baseball had about 12,649 players in 2024–25, while about 472,598 kids played high school baseball. Most college players were never early D1 commits. They found a fit and earned it.

Unsigned is not unwanted. It means you're not done yet.

Which colleges still recruit seniors?

Look past the logo. There are hundreds of programs across NCAA Division II and Division III, the NAIA and junior college (JUCO), and many of them build rosters later than Division I.

Build a list of 20–30 schools where you'd actually play, not just where you'd like the shirt.

Don't fear the portal, either. Players move in both directions now, and roster spots open late every year when players transfer, sign pro contracts or leave school. Coaches who lose a hitter in May need one in June. Be the senior whose video is already in their inbox.

What do coaches need to see from a late recruit?

A coach recruiting in the spring doesn't have time to project you. He needs proof he can trust in a few minutes.

What a coach recruiting in the spring wants to see from an uncommitted senior.
  1. Game at-bats against live pitchingTee and front toss show the swing; game video shows a hitter. Coaches want both.
  2. Measured numbers with a sourceExit velo, 60-yard time and arm strength from a showcase, radar or sensor — say where each number came from.
  3. A short, clean swing videoSide and behind angles, full body, a few swings each. Follow our filming checklist.
  4. Grades and a transcriptEspecially for D3 and NAIA. Good grades open doors that velo can't.
  5. A coach who will vouch for youCoachability gets checked. Line up your high school or travel coach as a reference.

What's the best 90-day plan for an uncommitted senior?

Treat it like a season. Proof first, then outreach, then visits.

DaysFocusWhat gets done
1–30ProofFilm game and swing video, collect measured numbers, order a transcript, build your 20–30 school list
31–60OutreachEmail your top 15 programs with video, numbers, schedule and a coach reference; follow up in 7–10 days
61–90VisitsAttend camps, tryouts and visits at the schools that answer; keep emailing the next group

Keep emails short: who you are, position, grad year, two or three numbers with sources, a video link, your next game and your coach's contact. Coaches rarely watch long videos, so lead with your best swings.

"Two choices: A. Do everything in your control. B. Anything but A." You don't control a roster limit. You control your video, your emails, your grades and how hard you train tomorrow.

Should an unsigned senior keep training during recruiting?

Absolutely. The best recruiting video is the one you film a month from now, after a month of real work. Late recruits get signed because they're getting better while everyone else is waiting.

Keep your swing sharp for the summer. If you're playing summer ball, every game is another chance to film live at-bats against good arms and send coaches something new.

Train all 4 pillars, not just the swing: The Swing, Strength & Explosiveness, the Hitting Processor and the Mental Approach. Coaches notice hitters with MAA — Mechanically Advantaged Angles — who stay inside and above the ball, and who make good decisions against live arms.

"Belief is the most powerful human force." Belief built on real work is what lets you swing free at a tryout with a coach writing notes.

Start with SwingChecker™ to find your top priorities. When you want a coach's eyes on the swing that goes in your video, the AHD Swing Lab reviews side and rear angles for $79 per assessment. The Complete Hitter Masterclass trains all four pillars, and Lessons 1–3 are free.

Quick answers

Is it too late to get recruited for college baseball as a senior?

No. Division I spots are tighter, but Division II, Division III, NAIA and junior college programs keep recruiting seniors through the spring and summer. You have to reach out with good video and measured numbers.

Should an unsigned senior go to JUCO?

JUCO is a strong option for a hitter who needs at-bats and development. Remember that junior college enrollment now starts the NCAA eligibility clock under the new five-year rules, so make those years count.

What should a senior's recruiting email include?

Name, grad year, position, school and team, two or three measured numbers with their source, a short video link, your upcoming schedule, your GPA and a coach reference. Keep it short and personal to that school.

Do college coaches trust self-reported exit velocity?

Not much on its own. Numbers from a showcase, radar or sensor, plus game video against live pitching, carry far more weight than a number typed into a profile.
