Complete Hitters Are Built… It’s Earned!
Key takeaways
- NFHS courses are usually required to coach a high school team. A hitting coach certification is optional education on how to develop hitters.
- NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching covers the coach’s role, management, communication, conditioning and teaching. It isn’t built to teach you how to fix a swing.
- Your state association sets the rules. Check with your state and district for exactly which courses you need.
- Do the required courses first, then add hitting education. They stack. One doesn’t replace the other.
NFHS courses are the coaching education most state high school associations require before you can coach a team. A hitting coach certification teaches you how to assess and develop hitters. You usually need the first one, and the second one is what makes your hitters better.
NFHS courses are the general coaching education many state high school associations require to coach a team; they cover the coach’s role, management, communication and safety. A hitting coach certification is optional, hitting-specific training on assessing and developing hitters. They stack: do NFHS first.
Train it: Complete Hitter Development for Coaches →Every spring I hear from high school coaches who just finished their state’s required courses and figured they were now trained to coach hitting. They weren’t, and that’s not a knock on the courses. Those courses were never built for that job.
Here’s what NFHS is, what it covers, what it doesn’t, and how a hitting certification fits on top of it.
1. What is NFHS coaching certification?
NFHS is the National Federation of State High School Associations. Its Learning Center offers the coaching courses many state associations and school districts require.
- Fundamentals of Coaching. The core course: 12 clock hours across six modules covering educational athletics and the coach’s role, the coach as manager, interpersonal skills, physical conditioning and the coach as teacher.
- Safety courses. Many states and associations add courses like Concussion in Sports, First Aid, Health and Safety, and Protecting Students from Abuse.
- National coaching credentials. NFHS also offers a three-level credential, NFHS Coach Level 1, 2 and 3, for coaches who want to keep building.
Requirements vary by state. In Arizona, for example, the Canyon Athletic Association requires its head and assistant coaches to complete Fundamentals of Coaching and Concussion in Sports, with First Aid and Protecting Students from Abuse for head coaches, plus a fingerprint clearance card. Your state, association and district decide what you need. Check with your athletic director.
2. Does NFHS teach you how to coach hitting?
NFHS gets you on the field. It doesn’t fix your hitters.
NFHS courses teach you to run a safe, healthy, well-managed program. That matters, and I’d never tell a coach to skip it. But they’re built for every sport, so they don’t go into the skill of hitting.
They won’t teach you how to:
- Assess a hitter on video and find the one priority instead of ten faults
- Trace a symptom, like pulling off, back to its root cause
- Coach the swing by checkpoints and Mechanically Advantaged Angles (MAA)
- Train timing, pitch recognition and swing decisions, the Hitting Processor
- Build a hitter’s approach, routine and reset for the mental side
HIGH SCHOOL COACHES
NFHS VS.HITTING CERT.
- NFHS: usually required
- NFHS: every sport, safety, conduct
- Hitting cert: optional
- Hitting cert: assess and develop
- They stack
ONE GETS YOU ON THE FIELD.
3. NFHS vs. hitting coach certification: side by side
| NFHS courses | Hitting coach certification | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Safe, well-run school programs | Developing better hitters |
| Usually required? | Often, by your state, association or district | No, it’s optional education |
| Sport-specific? | No, built for every sport | Yes, hitting only |
| What it covers | Coach’s role, management, communication, conditioning, safety | Assessment, the swing, strength, the Hitting Processor, the mental approach |
| Do you coach on camera? | No | In a good one, yes |
| Replaces the other? | No | No |
They stack. Do what your state requires first. Then add the hitting education that actually changes what happens in your cage and your games.
4. How does the AHD hitting certification fit with NFHS?
The AHD Coach Certification is hitting-specific coach education for baseball and fastpitch coaches. It picks up where your required courses stop.
- 24 lessons, about 12 instructional hours, across all 4 pillars of a complete hitter
- An exam (32 questions, 80% passes) and practical work: a video assessment, a 90-minute practice plan and a four-week hitter plan
- A filmed coaching session of 10–15 minutes that I grade on a 100-point rubric
- Softball notes in every lesson where fastpitch is different
- $199 one-time, Lessons 1–3 free
To be straight with you: AHD Certified Coach is an AHD credential, not an official CEU, and it does not replace NFHS or anything your state, association or district requires. It sits on top of them. For a full staff, see Team & Staff Training.
