Complete Hitters Aren’t Born. They’re Built… and Earned.
Key takeaways
- Hitting coach certifications fall into four types: required safety credentials, mechanics and technology programs, movement-screen programs, and complete-hitter coach education.
- Required credentials keep your team eligible but don’t teach you how to fix a hitter.
- Compare programs on what they make you prove: an exam, a graded coaching session and more than mechanics.
- AHD’s certification is 24 lessons, $199, covers all 4 pillars and ends with a filmed coaching session BK grades.
The best hitting coach certification is the one that teaches what you’re missing and makes you prove you can coach it. Most programs fall into four types, and they solve different problems.
Hitting coach certifications come in four types: required safety credentials, mechanics and technology programs, movement screens, and complete-hitter coach education. Get the required one first, then pick the program that teaches your gap and makes you prove it with an exam and a graded coaching session.
Train it: Complete Hitter Development for Coaches →Coaches ask me which certification to get. My honest answer is: it depends on what job you need it to do. Some credentials are required to coach a team. Some teach you a swing model and the technology to measure it. Some screen the body. A few teach you to coach the whole hitter.
I’m not going to rank anybody’s program by name. Prices and content change, and you should check any program’s current details on its own site. What I can give you is the way to compare them.
1. What kinds of hitting coach certifications are there?
| Type | What it teaches | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Required coaching credentials | Safety, conduct, abuse prevention, practice planning. Often required by a school, league or association. | Every coach. Usually not optional. |
| Mechanics and technology programs | A swing model, drills, and how to use sensors, video and data. Some are in person. | Coaches who want a measurement-driven swing system. |
| Movement-screen programs | Physical screening and how the body’s limits show up in the swing. | Coaches and trainers who work on the body side. |
| Complete-hitter coach education | Assessing and coaching the swing, strength, the Hitting Processor and the mental approach together. | Coaches who want one system for the whole hitter. |
None of these is wrong. They’re built for different jobs. The mistake is buying one and expecting it to do another one’s job.
2. Which coaching credentials are required?
That depends on where you coach. A few common examples:
- High school. Your state association sets the rules. Many use the NFHS Learning Center, whose Fundamentals of Coaching course covers the coach’s role, management, communication, conditioning and teaching.
- USA Baseball. In 2019 it launched a free A, B and C coach certification covering health and safety, team environment, responding to misconduct, practice planning and skill development, paired with a background check. Check its current requirements.
- USA Softball. Junior Olympic championship teams need at least one current-year ACE coach in the dugout, background checks for the adults, and SafeSport training for 17U and under.
Get what your team requires first. It protects players, and nothing else on this list replaces it. Then decide what you want to get better at.
3. How do I compare hitting coach certifications?
Compare what a program makes you prove, not how many videos it has.
- Is there an exam with a passing score? A completion checkmark proves you pressed play.
- Do you coach on camera? A filmed session graded on a clear rubric is the best proof you can teach a real hitter.
- Does it teach assessment before instruction? You should leave able to find one priority, not ten faults.
- Does it cover more than mechanics? Timing, pitch recognition, decisions and the mental game lose more at-bats than bad mechanics.
- Does it fit your sport? If you coach fastpitch, ask how it handles softball.
- Is it honest about what it is? An organization’s own credential, an accredited CEU, or a required license are three different things.
- What does it really cost? Price, travel, renewal, how long you keep access, and whether the final review is included.
FOR COACHES
BEFORE YOUPAY FOR ONE…
- Is there a real exam?
- Do you coach on camera?
- Assessment before instruction?
- More than mechanics?
- Honest about CEUs?
PROVE IT, DON’T JUST WATCH IT.

4. Where does the AHD certification fit?
AHD’s Complete Hitter Development for Coaches is complete-hitter coach education. Here’s exactly what it is, so you can hold it up against the checklist.
| Question | AHD answer |
|---|---|
| Price and access | $199 one-time, 1 year of access, exam and filmed-session review included |
| Lessons | 24 lessons, 8 modules, about 12 instructional hours; Lessons 1–3 free |
| Exam | 32 questions, 80% passes, retakes allowed |
| Coaching on camera | A 10–15 minute filmed session BK grades on a 100-point rubric; 80 passes |
| What it covers | All 4 pillars, through Assess, Diagnose, Build Roadmap, Train, Reassess |
| Credential | AHD Certified Coach, valid two years, with a registry listing. An AHD credential, not an official CEU |
Where it is not the right fit: it won’t satisfy a state or league requirement, it isn’t a technology or sensor course, and it isn’t a medical or movement screen. If that’s the gap you need to fill, look at those types first.
Where it fits best: coaches who want to assess a hitter, pick the one priority that matters, and coach all four pillars, including Mechanically Advantaged Angles (MAA) in the swing. If you also want lesson-by-lesson teaching guides for every AHD course, Coach All-Access ($799) includes all 7 Coach Editions plus the certification.
5. Which hitting coach certification should I get?
- Get the required oneWhatever your school, league or association requires. No exceptions.
- Name your gapDiagnosing hitters? Measuring the swing? The body? The mental side? Write it down.
- Match the type to the gapUse the table above. Don’t buy a mechanics course to fix a planning problem.
- Try before you buyTake any free lessons a program offers. AHD’s first three certification lessons are free.
- Check what you have to proveExam, filmed session, rubric. If you never have to coach, it isn’t certifying coaching.

It varies by program. Some required credentials are free or low cost, and in-person or technology programs often cost more. AHD’s is $199 one-time, with the exam and filmed-session review included.
