LESSON 1 OF 24 • THE SWING
Lesson 1: The Complete Hitter Test
From the AHD Complete Hitter Masterclass with BK, for baseball and fastpitch softball hitters.
Today's Lesson
“A great cage swing can still go 0-for-4. In fifteen minutes you’ll know which pillar is costing your hitter the most.”
A complete hitter needs four pillars working together: the Swing, Strength & Explosiveness, the Hitting Processor and the Mental Approach. Most hitters only measure the swing, and they measure it in the cage, where the speed, location and timing are known. Games give you none of that. The gap between those two is called the game gap.
Today you test all four pillars, measure your game gap, and fix the first thing that breaks it: balance. Start in an athletic setup with feet a little wider than the shoulders, knees soft and hands relaxed. Gather early and easy, swing hard, and hold the finish. If balance breaks, the head moves, the eyes move and the barrel follows.
Why It Matters
Training the wrong pillar is how hitters work hard for a year and stay the same. A number on each pillar, plus one fix you can see right away, turns “he just needs more reps” into a plan.
Coaching Cue
Start athletic. Stay athletic. Finish athletic.
Today's Work
The test and the quick win (about 25 minutes):
• Swing: 10 tee swings at game speed, filmed from the open side. Hold every finish for a 3-count. Count balanced finishes (out of 10). Then check the video against the 10 phases in order: stance and ready position, gather, directionally sound load, launch position, the bump, letting go of the arrow, the barrel approach, contact and hand placement, extension, finish. Circle the first phase that breaks.
• Strength & explosiveness: best of 3 standing broad jumps. Write the distance.
• Hitting Processor: 10 mixed front tosses. Call “yes” or “no” out loud before the ball is halfway. Count correct calls (out of 10).
• Mental approach: rate 1–5, honestly: “I have a plan every at-bat” and “I reset fast after a bad at-bat.” Add them (out of 10).
• Game gap: 10 front tosses down the middle you know are coming, then 10 mixed in and out. Count hard hits in each round.
• Quick win: 2 sets of 8 freeze-finish swings. Gather early and easy, swing at full speed, hold every finish for a 3-count. Then retake the 10-swing balance test.
Track It
Swing + Processor + Mental = your score out of 30. Write the broad jump and your game gap (known hard hits minus mixed hard hits; 0–2 is game-ready, 5 or more means something is leaking). Circle your lowest pillar. Write your balance retest next to your first swing score. Most hitters gain 2–4 balanced finishes in one session.
Next: Lesson 2 builds the first two phases of the swing: the stance, the ready position and the gather.
The 4-Pillar Baseline
You need: Tee, bat, 20 balls, a partner for front toss, tape measure
How to play: Run all four tests in one session: 10 tee swings with a 3-count finish, 3 broad jumps, 10 yes/no calls on mixed front toss, and the two 1–5 mental ratings.
Scoring: 1 point per balanced finish (10) + 1 point per correct yes/no call (10) + your two mental ratings (10). Out of 30. Single 15, Double 21, Triple 26. Log the broad jump and game gap separately.
0 TB1️⃣ SINGLE
1 TB2️⃣ DOUBLE
2 TB3️⃣ TRIPLE
3 TB💥 HR
4 TB
Grade it: Below 15 = out. 15+ = single. 21+ = double. 26+ = triple. A perfect 30 = home run.
