LESSON 2 OF 24 • THE SWING
Lesson 2: Stance, Ready Position and the Gather
From the AHD Complete Hitter Masterclass with BK, for baseball and fastpitch softball hitters.
Today's Lesson
“You can’t hit from a bad start. Get athletic before the pitcher ever moves.”
The stance is how you stand in the box. Feet a little wider than the shoulders, knees soft, weight on the insides of the balls of your feet, hands relaxed near the back shoulder, both eyes level on the pitcher. The ready position is that stance with life in it: a little rhythm, never frozen. A hitter who locks up has to unlock before he can move, and that costs time.
The gather is the first move. As the pitcher starts, you collect your weight into the back side, early and easy, with the head staying put. It feels small and smooth, like an infielder getting set before the pitch. The common mistake is a late gather that turns into a rush, so the whole swing starts behind. Early and easy beats late and hard every time.
Softball note: from 43 feet the ball gets there faster, so start the gather as the pitcher’s arm begins its circle and keep it smaller than a baseball gather. A slightly wider stance with less stride gives you less to time. Keep the hands soft near the back shoulder, because high, tense hands make the rise ball hard to cover.
Why It Matters
Every phase after this one is built on the start. An athletic stance and an early, easy gather give the hitter time, balance and a clear look at the ball before anything else happens.
Coaching Cue
Athletic, alive, gather early.
Today's Work
Session (about 20 minutes):
• Stance check: 5 reps in front of a mirror or phone. Feet a little wider than the shoulders, knees soft, weight on the insides of the feet, hands relaxed, eyes level.
• Grip check: rate grip pressure 1–10 before every rep and keep it at 4 or lower all session.
• Rhythm reps: 10 reps of a small ready-position rhythm (a light rock or hand movement) for 3 seconds, then gather and freeze. Head stays on a tape mark the whole time.
• Gather on cue: a partner or pitching video goes through the motion. Start your gather when the pitcher’s hands break. 10 reps, no swing.
• Freeze tee: 10 tee swings. Gather early and easy, swing at full speed, hold every finish for a 3-count.
Track It
Write your on-time gathers out of 10 and your head-on-the-mark count. Note whether a late gather made any swing feel rushed.
Next: Lesson 3 takes that gather into a directionally sound load and a strong launch position.
Ready and Gather
You need: Partner or pitching video, bat, tape mark next to your head, phone filming from the open side
How to play: Take 10 full reps against the pitcher’s motion: set your stance, find your rhythm, gather, then swing. Check each rep on video.
Scoring: Up to 3 points per rep: athletic stance with relaxed hands, gather started on time with the pitcher’s hand break, head stayed on the mark through the gather. Out of 30.
