1. Athletic Setup
Start in a balanced, athletic position that allows movement in either direction. The setup should create freedom, not tension.

The baseball swing sequence has eight phases: athletic setup, gather, load with direction, launch, barrel approach (above and inside), contact, extension and finish. Each phase sets up the next, so a breakdown early in the sequence usually shows up later as a flaw at contact.
Train it: Swing Structure & Mechanics Masterclass →2. Gather
The hitter organizes pressure and rhythm while keeping the head and center of mass under control.
3. Load with Direction
Load with direction. The load is directionally sound: pressure moves into the back side and the body works toward the pitcher, so the hitter arrives in a strong launch position without leaking posture or balance.
4. Launch
At launch the hitter should be athletic, hands back and up, back elbow organized, knob toward the catcher and the barrel under control.
THE SWING SEQUENCE
EIGHTPHASES.
- Setup ↓ Gather ↓ Load
- Launch ↓ Barrel Approach
- Contact ↓ Extension ↓ Finish
CONTACT IS THE RESULT OF THE SEQUENCE.
5. Barrel Approach (Above & Inside)
After launch, the barrel approaches the ball from above and inside. The hands stay inside the ball and the barrel works on a direct path behind them, then flattens into the hitting zone on the plane of the pitch. Get the approach right and contact takes care of itself. Miss it and the hitter casts, gets long or rolls over.
6. Contact
Contact is the result of the sequence. The barrel should arrive through a path that matches the pitch with posture and balance intact.
7. Extension
Continue through the ball. Extension is not a forced pose; it is the result of the barrel continuing on a productive path after contact.
8. Finish
A strong finish shows that the hitter managed speed and force without losing body control. Balance at the end is evidence, not the only goal.

THELESSON.
- Start athletic, not tense.
- Keep the head under control.
- Move forward at the pitcher.
- Launch: hands back and up.
- Continue through the ball.
- Finish in balance.

Quick answers
What are the phases of a baseball swing?
There are eight: athletic setup, gather, load with direction, launch, barrel approach (above and inside), contact, extension and finish. They work as one connected movement. Each phase sets up the next, so a problem early in the swing usually shows up later at contact.
What should a hitter look like at launch?
At launch the hitter should be athletic, with hands back and up, the back elbow organized, the knob toward the catcher and the barrel under control. The directional load before it should get the hitter there without leaking posture or balance.
Why does balance at the finish matter?
A strong finish shows the hitter managed speed and force without losing body control. Balance at the end is evidence, not the only goal. Same with extension: it is not a forced pose. It is the result of the barrel continuing on a productive path after contact.
What order should the body move in a baseball swing?
From the ground up: the lower half starts the move, the hips rotate, the torso follows and the hands and barrel come last. That order is what creates bat speed without the arms taking over.
