Key takeaways

  • To hit a softball farther, she needs more bat speed, better contact (barrel squared up on the ball) and a launch that turns that contact into line drives and hard fly balls.
  • Bat speed starts from the ground: force into the ground, hips and trunk rotating in sequence, and a barrel that gets on the plane of the pitch early.
  • Drills alone don’t add power. A stronger, more explosive athlete swings faster; drills teach her how to use it.
  • Fix contact before chasing distance. A hard swing that misses the barrel goes nowhere.

To hit a softball farther, a hitter needs three things working together: more bat speed, square contact on the barrel, and a launch that turns hard contact into line drives and fly balls instead of ground balls. Bat speed comes from ground force, hip and trunk rotation and real strength, not from a magic drill.

QUICK ANSWER

To hit a softball farther, increase bat speed, square the ball up on the barrel and launch it as a line drive or fly ball. Bat speed comes from ground force, hip and trunk rotation, a barrel on plane early and a stronger, more explosive body, not from drills alone.

I coached high school and college softball in Arizona and Texas for 30 years. Every season a parent asked me how to get their daughter to hit the ball harder. The honest answer was never one drill.

Here’s what actually makes a fastpitch hitter hit it farther, what to fix first, and what you can and can’t train in the backyard.

1. What makes a softball go farther off the bat?

Strip away the noise and distance comes from three things. Miss one and the other two get wasted.

Bat speed × square contact × launch = distance.

Notice that two of the three are skill, not size. I’ve watched plenty of small, quick hitters drive the ball into the gap while bigger kids hit routine fly balls. The small hitters found the barrel every time and launched it right. The bigger kids had the engine but not the steering. Both groups can get better, but they need different work, which is why guessing wastes a season.

Exit velocity is the result of the first two. If you want to see where she stands, our softball bat speed test shows how to build a simple speed profile at home, and exit velocity by age gives you context without turning numbers into a contest.

2. How do you hit a softball harder?

You hit a softball harder by swinging faster AND finding the barrel. Bat speed in fastpitch is built from the ground up. The swing is a chain, and each link has to hand off energy to the next one.

  1. Push into the ground. Her back leg loads and her front side braces at landing; that ground force is where the speed starts.
  2. Rotate hips, then trunk. The hips turn first and the shoulders follow a beat later, which stretches the trunk like a rubber band and snaps it back.
  3. Let the hands deliver the barrel. The hands stay connected to the turn and send the barrel to the ball instead of pushing it.
  4. Get on plane early and stay there. The barrel matches the path of the pitch early, so she has a long window to square it up.
  5. Finish through the ball. She keeps speeding up through contact instead of slowing down to steer it.

Good hitters share these traits. AHD hitters build them with Mechanically Advantaged Angles (MAA), body positions that let force move through the chain without leaking. If her stance and setup make that hard, start with our softball batting stance guide.

3. Why does she hit the ball hard but not far?

This is one of the most common questions I get. She hits rockets, but they’re all on the ground or they hook foul. That’s a contact and launch problem, not a strength problem.

In fastpitch the ball is released low, below the zone, so it isn’t coming down steeply the way a baseball pitch from a mound does. A barrel that chops steeply down at it meets the ball for a split second and drives it into the dirt. A barrel that gets on plane with the pitch early has more time to hit it squarely and lift it.

Timing is part of contact. If she’s late on good speed, the fix is in her load and decision, not her biceps. Our sibling posts on how to time a fastpitch pitcher and how to hit fast pitching go deeper there. Bat fit matters too: a bat she can’t control costs her barrel speed, so check our softball bat size chart.

4. Can hitting drills alone add power?

No. I’ll be blunt about this because parents spend a lot of money finding it out. Drills teach her how to USE the speed and strength she has. They don’t create much new speed on their own.

Drills organize power. Strength and speed create it.

A hitter with clean mechanics and a weak, slow body hits the ball solidly, but not far. The hitters who keep adding distance year after year are getting stronger and more explosive at the same time they refine the swing. That’s the Strength & Explosiveness pillar in our 4 Pillars of a Complete Hitter, and it carries just as much weight as The Swing.

Growth plays a part too. A 12-year-old who has a big growth spurt will often hit it farther without changing a thing, and then lose her timing for a month because her body changed. Be patient through those stretches and keep training the basics.

What helps her swing faster away from the bat:

We lay out a full plan by age in softball strength training for hitters, and rotational power for bat speed covers the med-ball side.

5. What should she work on first to hit farther?

Don’t collect drills. Find her biggest limiter and attack that first. In order, this is how I sort it out:

Film her from the side and from behind, then run the free SwingChecker. In about 3 minutes it ranks her top priority across the 4 pillars, with cues and matching free lessons. If the answer is the engine, the bat speed training program is 24 lessons that build lower-body force, rotation and speed for hitters. If you want a coach looking at her swing every week, see our online softball hitting coaching. And if she’s still learning the basics, start with how to hit a softball before chasing distance.

Quick answers

Does a heavier softball bat make you hit farther?

Only if she can swing it fast and control it. A bat that is too heavy slows the barrel and costs contact, so most hitters hit it farther with a bat they can swing quickly.

What muscles help you hit a softball harder?

The legs and hips start the swing, the trunk and core transfer the energy, and the grip and forearms control the bat through contact. Training them together for speed matters more than isolated muscles.

How can I increase my bat speed in softball fast?

There’s no quick fix. Clean up timing and bat fit first, then add strength, med-ball rotational throws and explosive jumps and sprints over months, not weeks.

Why do I hit so many ground balls in softball?

Usually the barrel is cutting down across the ball or she is early and rolling over. Getting the barrel on plane with the pitch earlier and staying on time turns those into line drives.

Don’t collect drills. Build a complete hitter.
