Key takeaways
- A hitting coach certification is worth it when it gives you a system and makes you prove you can use it.
- It’s NOT worth it if you want a badge without the work, or if it only grades whether you watched videos.
- A real certification should require coursework, tests, and a graded coaching session on video.
- AHD’s requires all 8 courses, a final in each, a 50-question final and a Practical Video Exam I grade: $599 founding, $799 regular, $995 with personal review.
A hitting coach certification is worth it if it teaches you a complete system for assessing and developing hitters and then makes you prove it with tests and a graded coaching session. If it only hands you a certificate for watching videos, it isn’t worth much to you or to the families you coach.
Yes, if it teaches a complete system and makes you prove it with tests and a graded coaching video; no, if it only rewards watching videos. AHD’s requires all 8 courses, a final in each, a 50-question final and a Practical Video Exam BK grades, at $599 founding.
Train it: AHD Coach Certification → Free tool: AHD Coach Foundations Lesson 1 (free) →I’ll be straight, because I sell one. A certificate doesn’t make anybody a hitting coach. Coaching real hitters, getting feedback, and getting better at it does. A good certification speeds that up and proves it happened.
Here’s who should spend the money, who shouldn’t, and what to demand before you do.
1. Who is a hitting coach certification worth it for?
- Private instructors building a business. A clear system and a credential families can check helps you explain what you do and why.
- High school and travel coaches. You get an assessment process and practice plans you can run with a whole roster.
- Former players who want to teach. Hitting well and teaching hitting are different skills. A system bridges that gap.
- Parents who coach their own kids. If you’re going to coach anyway, learn to assess first and teach one priority at a time.
WORTH IT IF…
YOU WANTA SYSTEM.
- You coach hitters seriously
- You’ll coach on camera
- You’ll take honest grading
- You coach the whole hitter
PAPER IS THE LAST STEP.
2. Who should skip it?
- Anyone looking for a shortcut. If you won’t coach on camera and take honest feedback, save your money.
- Coaches who need a state requirement met. A hitting certification doesn’t replace your state association’s or league’s required coaching courses. See NFHS vs. Hitting Coach Certification.
- Anyone who wants an official CEU today. AHD Certified Coach is an AHD credential built to continuing-education standards. Until outside accreditation is approved, it is not an official CEU.
- Coaches who only want new drills. Don’t collect drills. Build a complete hitter. If you want a drill list, a certification is the wrong purchase.
3. What should a real hitting coach certification require?
Watching videos is not coaching. A real certification makes you coach.
Before you pay for any program, ask: Is there a test with a passing score? Do you have to coach on video? Is it graded on a clear rubric? Does it cover more than mechanics? Here’s how the AHD Coach Certification answers those.
| Requirement | AHD Coach Certification |
|---|---|
| Coursework | All 8 coach courses: the 7 Coach Editions plus the 24-lesson Coach Foundations course, 144 lessons |
| Course tests | A 20-question final test in every course; 80% passes, retakes allowed |
| Written final | A 50-question Certification Final across all 8 courses; 40 correct passes |
| Practical Video Exam | A 10–15 minute filmed coaching session plus your assessment, practice plan, four-week athlete plan and philosophy, graded by BK on a 100-point rubric |
| Price | $599 founding, $799 regular; $995 adds BK’s personal review of one athlete’s assessment and your development plan |
One thing to be clear about: the 24-lesson Coach Foundations course is one of the 8 required courses. On its own, it is not the certification. The credential comes from finishing all of it, including the video exam.
The rubric grades assessment accuracy, swing diagnosis, four-pillar integration, practice design, the individual plan and communication. It’s built around coaching the whole hitter — the swing coached by checkpoints and Mechanically Advantaged Angles (MAA), plus strength, the Hitting Processor and the mental approach.
4. How do parents actually judge a hitting coach?
Here’s the truth: most parents won’t ask to see your certificate first. They’ll watch what happens with their kid. In my experience, they look for this.
- Did you assess before you taught?A coach who tests first, with something like the free SwingChecker™, looks like a professional.
- Did you pick one priority?Parents trust a coach who can name the one thing and explain why.
- Is there a plan?Where is the hitter going over the next four weeks?
- Is there a retest?Progress they can see is what keeps them coming back.
A good certification should train exactly those habits. That’s where the value is. For the parent’s side, see How to Vet a Hitting Coach. Have your hitters run the free SwingChecker™ before your first session.
5. So is it worth it for you?
If you’re going to coach hitters seriously and you’re willing to be graded on camera, yes, I think a real certification is worth it. If you want paper without the work, no.
There’s simple math too. At $100–$150 an hour, the $599 founding price is covered by roughly 4–6 one-hour lessons. That’s arithmetic, not a promise.

Quick answers
Is a hitting coach certification worth it?
It is if it teaches a complete system and makes you prove it with tests and a graded coaching session. It isn’t if it only rewards watching videos.
Do you need a certification to give hitting lessons?
There is no single required license to teach hitting. High school coaches usually have state coaching-education requirements, which a hitting certification does not replace.
How much does a hitting coach certification cost?
Prices vary by program. The AHD Coach Certification is $599 at the founding price, $799 regular, or $995 with BK’s personal review of an athlete assessment and development plan.
Do parents care if a hitting coach is certified?
Some do, but most judge a coach by whether their kid gets a clear assessment, one priority, a plan and visible progress. A good certification should train those habits.
Don’t collect drills. Build a complete hitter.
