Complete Hitters Are Built… It’s Earned!
Key takeaways
- A softball hitting coach certification is separate from the credential your league or association requires to coach a team.
- Fastpitch hitters face a pitch released low from about 43 feet, so timing starts earlier and pitch movement works differently than in baseball.
- A good certification should make you assess, prioritize and coach on camera, not just watch videos.
- AHD’s certification has a Softball note wherever fastpitch is different, and the Coach Editions go deeper; Coach All-Access gets you both.
An online softball hitting coach certification teaches you how to assess and coach fastpitch hitters, then makes you prove it. It does not replace the safety credential your league requires. Most fastpitch coaches need both.
Fastpitch coaches need two things: the credential their league or school requires (like USA Softball ACE, a background check and SafeSport) and hitting education. AHD’s online certification is 24 lessons, $199, with Softball notes and a graded filmed session.
Train it: Complete Hitter Development for Coaches →I coached high school and college baseball and softball in Arizona and Texas for 30 years. The best fastpitch coaches I worked with weren’t the ones with the most patches on their bag. They were the ones who could watch a hitter for five swings and tell you the one thing holding her back.
This guide is for travel, high school and college fastpitch coaches, private instructors, and parents who coach. Here’s what you’re required to have, what you should actually learn, and how to get it online.
1. Do softball coaches need a certification?
There are two kinds of coaching credentials, and people mix them up all the time.
- The credential to coach the team. Your association or school sets this. For USA Softball Junior Olympic championship play, every team needs at least one current-year ACE coach in the dugout, and adults working with the team need a passed background check, plus SafeSport training when the roster has players 17 or under.
- School coaching education. High school coaches usually complete their state association’s required courses. Many states use the NFHS Learning Center for this. Check your state association.
- A hitting-specific certification. This is optional. It’s where you learn a system for assessing, teaching and planning for hitters, and prove you can use it.
The first two keep players safe and keep your team eligible. They’re not built to teach you how to fix a swing, a timing problem or a hitter who can’t lay off the rise ball. That’s what the third one is for.
2. What’s different about coaching fastpitch hitters?
The principles of a good swing are the same in both sports. The problem the hitter is solving is not.
- Less time. The pitcher throws from 43 feet in most high school and college play. A 70 mph pitch gives a hitter roughly the reaction time of a mid-90s baseball fastball.
- The ball comes from below. The release is low, so a rise ball can genuinely travel up through the zone and a drop ball is thrown down through it. Hitters who chase the drop beat it into the ground.
- Timing starts earlier. A fastpitch hitter has to be gathered and loading as the pitcher’s arm comes around, not after the ball is out.
- More ways to hit. Slappers, bunts for a hit and the short game matter more, and a hitting coach has to coach them.
FASTPITCH
WHAT CHANGESIN FASTPITCH.
- Pitched from about 43 feet
- Released below the zone
- Rise ball and drop ball
- Timing starts earlier
- Slap and short game
SAME PRINCIPLES. DIFFERENT PROBLEM.
None of this means a different swing model. AHD hitters in both sports work toward Mechanically Advantaged Angles (MAA), the positions that let a hitter create force and adjust. It means the coach has to teach timing, reads and decisions with fastpitch in mind. For the details, read Softball vs Baseball Swing: What Changes? and How to Time a Fastpitch Pitcher.
3. What should a softball hitting coach certification teach?
Watching videos is not coaching. A real certification makes you coach.
Before you pay for any online program, ask these questions.
- Does it teach you to assess before you instruct? You should leave with a repeatable way to find a hitter’s first priority.
- Does it cover more than mechanics? Timing, pitch recognition, swing decisions and the mental side lose more fastpitch at-bats than bad mechanics do.
- Is there an exam with a passing score? Not just a completion checkmark.
- Do you coach on camera? A filmed session graded on a clear rubric is the best proof you can teach.
- Is it honest about what it is? Know whether it’s the organization’s own credential or an accredited CEU.
4. How does AHD work for fastpitch coaches?
AHD has one set of courses for baseball and fastpitch softball, not a separate softball program. Here’s how the pieces fit, straight.
| Piece | What a fastpitch coach gets |
|---|---|
| AHD Coach Certification ($199) | 24 lessons on the coaching process: Assess, Diagnose, Build Roadmap, Train, Reassess. Exam, practical assignments and a 10–15 minute filmed session BK grades. Lessons 1–3 free. |
| Coach Editions ($119–$299 each) | Lesson-by-lesson teaching guides for every AHD course, with a Softball note wherever fastpitch is different. |
| Coach All-Access ($799) | All 7 Coach Editions plus the Certification. The full set for a fastpitch coach. |
| Credential | AHD Certified Coach: numbered certificate and registry listing, valid two years. |
The certification teaches the coaching process both sports share: how to assess a hitter, trace a symptom to its cause, pick one priority and build the plan. Wherever fastpitch is different, like the low release, the rise ball and drop ball, and the earlier timing window, the lesson has a Softball note. The Coach Editions go deeper, lesson by lesson, including slapping and the short game. If you coach fastpitch and want both, Coach All-Access is the better buy.
To be straight with you: AHD Certified Coach is an AHD credential, not an official CEU, and it does not replace an ACE card or your state’s required courses. Enrollment opens November 15. Until then, join the coach launch list.
5. How can I start coaching fastpitch hitters better this season?
- Get your required credential firstACE, background check, SafeSport or your state’s courses, whatever your team plays under.
- Assess every hitterRun SwingChecker™ or the free 4 Pillars Hitter Scorecard to find each hitter’s weakest pillar.
- Pick one priority per hitterOne thing, until it changes. Write it down and share it with the player.
- Train timing every practiceFront toss from a shorter distance and mixed speeds, so the timing window feels like a game.
- Film and retestSame angles every time. If the number or the video didn’t change, change the plan.
Then start Certification Lesson 1 free and see if the way I teach the complete hitter fits how you coach.

THELESSON.
- Team credential ≠ hitting education
- Assess before you instruct
- Coach all 4 pillars

Quick answers
Is there an online softball hitting coach certification?
Yes. AHD’s Complete Hitter Development for Coaches is an online program for baseball and fastpitch coaches: 24 lessons, $199, with an exam and a filmed coaching session graded by BK. It is an AHD credential, not an official CEU.
Does a hitting certification replace USA Softball ACE?
No. ACE, background checks and SafeSport are what your team needs to play in USA Softball events. A hitting certification is optional education on how to coach hitters.
Is coaching fastpitch hitting different from baseball?
The swing principles are the same, but the pitch is released low from about 43 feet, so timing starts earlier and rise balls and drop balls change what hitters have to read.
How long does the AHD coach certification take?
It is 24 lessons and about 12 instructional hours. Most coaches finish in 4 to 8 weeks, and you get 1 year of access.
