Pressure At-Bat Do your decisions hold up when it counts?

Swing at strikes and take balls in a calm round. Then do it again with the game on the line: full count, bases loaded, a clock and a loud crowd. Your Composure score shows how much the pressure changed your decisions. Baseball and fastpitch.

Pressure At-Bat

Swing at strikes, take balls. Tap the buttons, or press Space to swing and T to take.

Why pressure changes decisions

Most hitters know the strike zone at 0-0. The question is whether they still know it at 3-2 with the bases loaded. Pressure speeds everything up: the hitter rushes, chases, or freezes on a strike. That is the Mental Approach, one of the 4 pillars every AHD hitter trains.

  • Composure: how much your swing/take decisions held up from the calm round to the pressure round. 70+ is steady, 85+ is ice in the veins.
  • Bounce-back: how you do on the very next pitch after a mistake. Good hitters let a bad pitch go.
  • Decisions: your calm-round accuracy, plus your chase rate and how many strikes you let go.

How to get better under pressure

Use the same short routine on every pitch: breathe out, pick your zone, eyes to the release. With two strikes, shrink the zone to a ball’s width beyond your hitting zone. After a mistake, step out, breathe, and say your one-word cue before stepping back in.

Training guide

What it trains

Composure: making good decisions when the game is on the line.

Who it’s for

Hitters who play well in practice but tighten up in big moments.

How to get better

  • Use your pre-pitch routine every pitch, not just when it matters.
  • Focus on the next pitch, not the result.
  • Compare your pressure score with your normal score and work on the gap.
  • Add pressure to practice: count reps, keep score and give consequences.

Questions

How do you measure mental toughness in a hitter?

Give the hitter the same job twice: once calm and once with the game on the line. If the swing/take decisions hold up under the clock, the crowd and a full count, that is composure. How they do on the very next pitch after a mistake is their bounce-back.

What is a good Composure score?

70 or higher means the hitter's decisions held steady under pressure. 85 or higher is ice in the veins. Below 55 means pressure is changing the decisions, which a pre-pitch routine can fix.

Can mental toughness be trained?

Yes. A simple pre-pitch routine, a two-strike plan and a reset after mistakes are trainable skills. That is the Mental Approach pillar every AHD hitter trains.
