Softball Pitch Recognition Trainer Read the rise, the drop and the change. Call it before it gets there.

A free fastpitch pitch recognition game from the hitter’s view. The pitcher comes through the windmill and you call it. Start with Fastball or Off-Speed, then step up to Call the Pitch: Fastball, Rise, Drop or Change. Call it right and early for a home run.

How to read fastpitch pitches

In fastpitch, the pitch changes planes. A baseball hitter mostly reads speed. A softball hitter has to read speed and direction, because the riseball climbs, the drop dives and the changeup floats, all from the same windmill.

  • Fastball: firm, tight spin, stays on its line.
  • Riseball: firm, backspin with the seams rolling up. Starts at the belt and climbs late.
  • Dropball: firm, topspin with the seams rolling down. Looks like a strike, then falls off the table.
  • Changeup and drop-change: soft. They float out slower with loose, tumbling seams.

Two ways to play

Fastball / Off-Speed trains the first read: firm or soft. Call the Pitch is the varsity read: Fastball, Rise, Drop or Change. Because rise and drop show their break later, the scoring gives you a little more time in that mode.

How it’s scored

Like at-bats. The earlier you call it right, the bigger the hit: home run, triple, double, single. A wrong call is a strike. No call is frozen. Your Processor Score is your total bases out of a perfect round, shown as 0–100.

Training guide

What it trains

Reading fastpitch pitches early: fastball, changeup, riseball, dropball and curve, from 43 feet where the hitter has less time than in baseball.

Who it’s for

Fastpitch hitters 10U through college, and coaches who want a daily recognition rep that doesn’t need a pitcher.

How to get better

  • Commit to the call before the ball is halfway. Fastpitch gives you less time, so the read has to come earlier.
  • Watch the hand and the release. Changeups and drops often show something different out of the hand.
  • Train in short daily sets and track your score over a week.
  • Pair it with live front toss that mixes speeds, calling every pitch out loud.

Questions

How do softball hitters recognize a riseball?

A riseball comes out at fastball speed with backspin, so the seams roll up toward the top of the ball, and it starts around the belt before climbing late. If it’s already at the letters early, it’s going to finish above the zone.

How do you tell a dropball from a changeup?

A dropball is thrown hard with topspin and falls late. A changeup floats out noticeably slower with loose, tumbling seams. Speed is the first read: if it’s firm and diving, it’s the drop; if it’s soft, it’s the change.

How can a fastpitch hitter practice pitch recognition at home?

Use a short daily rep like this trainer, then take it to the cage: have someone mix pitches in front toss or off a machine and call the pitch out loud before you swing.

Is the Softball Pitch Recognition Trainer free?

Yes. It runs in your phone or computer browser with no app and no sign-up, and scores are saved only on your device.
