Spin Read Test How fast can you see spin?

A spinning ball flashes and disappears. Call the pitch from the spin. Every right answer makes the next flash faster, until the test finds your limit in milliseconds. Baseball and fastpitch.

Spin Read Test

Keep your eyes on the +. Call the spin with the buttons, or keys 1–4.

Why spin is the first read

Every pitch comes out of the same arm slot. The spin is what gives it away. The sooner a hitter reads it, the more time is left to decide and commit. That’s the Hitting Processor, one of the 4 pillars every AHD hitter trains.

  • Backspin (fastball, riseball): the seams roll up.
  • Topspin (curveball, dropball): the seams roll down.
  • Red dot (slider): a red dot in the middle of the ball.
  • Side spin (fastpitch curve): the seams roll across.
  • Slow backspin (changeup): slow or almost no backspin. The seams barely turn, and they never roll down like topspin.

How the test works

The first flash is 600 milliseconds. Get it right and the next one is about 18% shorter. Miss and it’s 25% longer. After 20 flashes, your spin-read speed is the average of your last 8. Under 150 ms is a College-level read, and 90 or under is Elite.

Training guide

What it trains

How fast you can read spin: backspin, topspin, side spin, the slider’s red dot and the changeup’s slow backspin.

Who it’s for

Any hitter who struggles to pick up breaking balls or changeups, baseball or fastpitch.

How to get better

  • Retest weekly and watch your average flash time drop. The test gets harder as you get faster.
  • Play catch with a striped or marked ball and call the spin on every throw.
  • Watch pitchers’ bullpens and call spin from behind the catcher or the screen.
  • Wiffle ball is great spin training: the ball moves a lot and you see it every swing.

Questions

How do hitters see spin on a pitch?

Each pitch spins a different way out of the hand. A fastball or riseball has backspin, so the seams roll up. A curveball or dropball has topspin, so the seams roll down. A slider shows a red dot, and a changeup has slow or almost no backspin, so the seams barely turn and never roll forward. Elite hitters read it in the first few feet.

How do you train spin recognition?

Short, fast looks. This test flashes a spinning ball and shortens the flash every time you’re right, so you train right at the edge of what you can read. Then take it to live pitches with the Pitch Recognition Trainer.

What is a good spin-read time?

In this test, 150 milliseconds or faster is a College-level read and 90 or faster is Elite. Track your own number over time: faster means more time to decide on a real pitch.

Is the Spin Read Test free?

Yes. It runs in your phone or computer browser with no app and no sign-up, and your best time is saved only on your device.
