Home Run Distance Calculator

Slide exit velocity and launch angle. Pick where you play.

What makes the ball carry

Distance comes from two numbers: how hard and at what angle. A ball hit 100 mph at about 28 degrees carries around 400 feet. Every extra mph adds roughly 5 feet. Below about 10 degrees it’s a ground ball, and above 45 it’s a pop-up no matter how hard it’s hit.

Warm air and altitude carry the ball farther, which is why it flies in the Arizona summer and in Denver. This calculator models drag and backspin lift and is calibrated to big-league batted-ball data, so treat it as a close estimate.

What it trains

Seeing how exit velocity and launch angle turn into distance, and why power comes from both.

Who it’s for

Hitters who want to hit the ball farther and understand what it takes.

How to get better

  • Most distance comes from exit velocity. Every mph adds a few feet.
  • With high exit velocity, launch angles around 25 to 35 degrees carry the farthest.
  • Build strength and bat speed to raise exit velocity.
  • Square the ball up. A mishit loses most of its speed.

Questions

How far does a 100 mph ball travel?

Around 400 feet at a launch angle near 28 degrees at sea level, a little farther in heat or altitude.

What is the best launch angle for home runs?

Roughly 25 to 35 degrees, with high exit velocity. Lower is a line drive; much higher is a fly ball or pop-up.

How much exit velocity do you need to hit a home run?

It depends on the field: Little League fences at 200 feet need far less than a 400-foot big-league center field. Try your numbers in the calculator.
