Match the Plane Set your bat path to the ball’s angle and hit line drives.

A fastball comes down at about 6 degrees. A curveball comes down steeper. A riseball comes up. The bat path that matches the ball’s plane hits line drives. Too steep is a pop-up, too flat is a ground ball.

Match the Plane

Drag the slider to set your bat path angle, then tap Swing (or press Space).

What “matching the plane” means

The ball and the bat both travel on a plane. When the bat’s path matches the angle the pitch is coming in on, the barrel stays on the ball’s line longer, so mistimed swings still hit line drives. That’s why a slightly upward swing works: pitches are coming down.

  • Too steep: under the ball, pop-ups and swing-and-miss.
  • Too flat or chopping: on top of the ball, ground balls.
  • Matched: line drives, the most valuable batted ball in the game.

Training guide

What it trains

Matching the bat’s path to the ball’s downward plane, so you get more line drives and fewer pop-ups and grounders.

Who it’s for

Hitters who roll over, pop up, or swing level at a pitch that is coming down.

How to get better

  • Every pitch comes in on a slight downward angle. Match it, don’t chop or uppercut.
  • Use a high tee and a low tee and try to hit line drives off both.
  • Film from the side and compare your bat angle at contact to the pitch angle.
  • Track how many line drives you hit out of 10.

Questions

What is attack angle in baseball?

The angle the bat is traveling at contact, up or down. A slightly upward attack angle matches pitches that are coming down, which is why it produces line drives.

What is a good attack angle?

One that matches the pitch. Fastballs come down around 4–7 degrees and curveballs steeper, so most good hitters swing slightly up, in the single digits to low teens.

Is it different for fastpitch softball?

Yes. Fastpitch pitches come in flatter, and the riseball comes up, so softball hitters match a flatter plane.
